Why do Resistance Training or Weight Training?

Weight training

Weight training is a form of resistance training. Resistance training can be with bands or free weights or body weight or machines. Any type of training that incurs a ‘resistance’ is – well – resistance training.

Weight training is more commonly referred to as a type of training that usually has movements to isolate one or a specific group of muscles. Using the free weights such as dumbbells or barbells, or using the weighted machines.

“Lose weight, how?”

A big part of answering that question on how lose weight is to also learn about some of the biggest mistakes people can make when they are learning how to weight less. So read on and enjoy – this is part one of the short series of 40 things that people screw up when it comes to their fitness and health. (here is part two if you haven’t read it “How Much Do I Weigh“)

People often will skip using resistance training or weight training during their efforts to lose weight because of a misconception that you will get big or bulky just by handling the weights or incorporating resistance training – this misconception is especially common with women.

You need not worry. To gain large muscle mass like a body builder you have to spend hours and hours of concerted effort applying specific muscle building techniques. You really are in no danger of becoming ‘bulky’ and if your goal is to lose weight and grow lean and trim, resistance training absolutely is the way to go. By adding weight or resistance training to your weight loss regime you will exponentially increase your efforts in the same amount of time.

Dieting alone can actually turn down your metabolic rate and you can change this by developing your muscles. When you build strong, lean muscle mass you are developing your own home grown fat burning machines.

Muscles use more calories to work and the more muscle the higher your metabolic rate. In other words, resistance training can radically increase your metabolism. Just like a car, the bigger the engine, the more fuel it takes to run! Did you know that by adding one pound of muscle you increase your fuel consumption by 75 calories?

If you really have no desire to use classic gym equipment maybe you might like to try using resistance bands or exercise bands. Add strength training to your day and you will increase the rate of your fat loss and at the same time be sculpting a lean sexy body. And here is one really great bonus that people seem to forget about – how much easier things will be for you as you get stronger too. Easier to open heavy doors, carry groceries or the kids, increased energy, reduced body pains, and many more benefits. Add strength training to your day – today!
